Innovative Licensing Model Provides New Options for Artists and Brands

Seattle—J’net Smith, Inc. Marketing – Licensing – Publishing has created a new licensing business model that is catching the attention of artists, designers and brands.  Rather than paying the traditional 40-50% agent fee, many creative individuals and companies prefer to pay a reasonable coaching fee up front and a significantly lower commission on the back end.

But coaching and do-it-yourself licensing isn’t for everyone.  “It’s very important to acknowledge whether you possess the skills needed to license your artwork on your own and keep track of all the business aspects,” says Smith. “It takes passion and commitment, but I’m finding lots of artists and companies who want to manage it all, and have the skill sets!” One of her artistic clients has signed nearly 20 licensing deals in less than two years, while being coached by Smith.

This innovative model is being highlighted in an article by Smith titled, “Do you need a coach?” in ArtNetwork Press’ Third Edition of Licensing Art 101. Smith’s coaching teaches potential licensors what needs to be done, when to do it, where to find it, how to do it and why it is important. Depending on the clients’ needs and requests, she will manage multiple licensing functions, such as system development, branding, marketing, public relations, sales and contract negotiations, as well as pulls together resources and a reliable team.

“It’s exciting to see artists and companies learn about the licensing industry and discover what they can do themselves. Overall, it’s a much lower cost in the long-run than utilizing an agent. And clients pay for only what they need.” Smith declares.

Not only are new-to-licensing artists and designers utilizing her services, but so are several who have ten to fifteen years experience and need new strategic approaches to keep up with the ever-changing industry.  Also brands, looking to licensing as one of their distribution and revenue channels, have come on board.

J’net Smith’s latest client is Affirmagy™, is known for their line of Affirmawraps® blankets, and soon a host of other products, which carry powerful affirmations. Affirmagy’s founder, Kristen Marie Schuerlein states, “We brought Jeanette on board to leverage our brand and build our licensing product platform for a variety of lines and audiences. Jeanette’s expertise in helping us navigate the world of licensing is a perfect fit and we couldn’t be happier. Success requires passion, knowledge and a go-for-it-attitude, and she possesses all three!”
